On the D1 and D2 Extras Sections

Post by Ink »

so. if you're in need of a refresher, the flash versions of Castle Repercussions D1 and D2 have unique extras compared to its other parts. well, "extras" is a misnomer, as when you click on the extras in both versions you will only see this text over slightly different screens:

(pssst, all of castle is fully archived on flashpoint! it's how i got these screencaps!)
the castle talks? who wants what? what are we finding?

thankfully, on good old deletionquality.net there was a thread dedicated to answering these exact questions. sadly, due to deletionquality.net's domain expiration date of around late 2017, the extensive contents of this thread are lost in the spotty archival work that only grabbed shots of the frontpage, Castle-related announcements and staff-written articles made over the years.

so why make this thread at all then?

well, only the contents were lost. not the actual text! when put together, the hidden messages are as follows:
Somewhere in your world they tell you this is what the people need.
You woke me out of my secret grave.
You let your pretty world in.
Chaos will entwine on defenseless soil.
I will remove the error of man.
the exacts of these messages and what they could possibly mean will be detailed in the following posts. this is just to get the thread rolling!

first of all, let's get the objective facts out of the way: all five messages are lyrical snippets from My Little Box (John Frizzell, featured in the film Ghost Ship) and Puritania (Dimmu Borgir, featured on the album Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia). for the sake of convenience, here are links to both tracks (apologies for any potential geoblocking):

https://youtu.be/Zl9TlzGI6ts?si=uRHP7woLj0khiEMZ

these are the lines sampled from My Little Box:
Somewhere in your world they tell you this is what the people need.
You woke me out of my secret grave.
You let your pretty world in.
and these are the lines sampled from Puritania:
Chaos will entwine on defenseless soil.
I will remove the error of man.
both tracks were featured prior to Repercussions, My Little Box appearing in Castle II and Puritania famously being included in Castle III Part C. when the grass was greener and copyright was a faint thought in everyone's heads, including Oscar's.

so what could any of this mean? does it have to mean anything? could be a cute set of easter eggs for deletionquality.net's forumgoers, with no significant impact on anything. no bearing on what would've, could've, should've happened in a theoretical sequel. there, /thread.

if that's the answer you come to, it's a perfectly sound one to have. if you're like me and not satisfied with that answer, do take note of the wording used on these screens:

The Castle talks. an in-universe reason for an easter egg hunt?

but then, this:

Someone wants something. Find it? what do you mean "someone?" what is the "something" here?

the following posts will be my own theories on what this, all five messages, could mean next to everything that's happened so far; but do feel free to add your own if inclined. i will be delving into notable instances of who that "someone" could be in both Castle III and Repercussions, alongside Oscar's choices of music in III.

thoughts in order, the umpteenth rewatch finished, a long day is done. now let's get to analyzing!
accompanying images to be added as i add them, so that's where all the eventual edits come from!

of course we'll start with the first line:
Somewhere in your world they tell you this is what the people need.
fortunately, this doesn't take much deduction work or really any theorizing, because (if you've watched recently) you can figure exactly what this is referring to: Superior's efforts to salvage Earth's ruinous state by acquiring this power resource that we, and General, and presumably Romanov know as "the artifact". General even outright tells Etrius a form of "this is what the people need" twice over, first as a sales pitch in III Part A and again more from the heart in III Part C.

it can't be referring to anything else but Superior and General's insistence. to add a bit more to it, i personally lean towards the idea that Superior is the one telling that "this is what the people need" to begin with, while General carries it out in the hopes that Earth will start repairing itself with the procuring of this power source.
